POLICE WFC WINS THE 2026 INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY CUP AFTER DEFEATING RAYON SPORTS WFC ON PENALTIES
Women’s football continues to grow as more girls showcase their talent
As part of celebrating the 2026 International Women’s Day, a special football event took place at Ubworoherane Stadium in Musanze District. The event featured women’s football matches aimed at promoting women’s participation in sports, particularly in football, and encouraging young girls to continue developing their talents.
The day was marked by different matches that showcased the determination, talent, and strength of women in football. Participants and spectators highlighted that such events are important in celebrating the value of women and supporting their role in various sectors, including sports.
The event was attended by several leaders, including the Governor of the Northern Province, the Mayor of Musanze District, representatives of the National Women’s Council at the district level, and the Chief Executive in charge of Sports Development, Gilbert Manier. The leadership of the Rwanda Football Federation (FERWAFA), headed by its President Fabrice Shema Ngoga, members of the Executive Committee, and other officials were also present, demonstrating their support for the development of women’s sports.
In the earlier match of the day, in the under-20 category, ATEFOP drew 0–0 with Nemba TSS in a competitive game where both teams showed strong performance and promising young talent. Although no team managed to score, the match highlighted the potential of young female players who represent the future of women’s football.
The main match of the day brought together Rayon Sports WFC and Police WFC. It was a highly competitive game with both teams displaying great determination and teamwork as they pushed for victory.
After regular time ended without any goals, the winner had to be decided through a penalty shootout. Police WFC performed better during the shootout and defeated Rayon Sports WFC 5–4 on penalties, claiming the 2026 International Women’s Day Cup.
Besides the trophy, participating teams received prizes including financial support and sports equipment aimed at promoting and developing girls’ football talent. Leaders present at the event emphasized the importance of continuing to support women’s sports as a way of promoting gender equality and ensuring that girls have the same opportunities as boys in athletics.
The event delivered a strong message about valuing and empowering women in all areas of life, including sports. Attendees noted that women’s participation in football continues to grow and that there is great hope for the future of women’s football in Rwanda.
Police WFC was congratulated for their well-deserved victory, while Rayon Sports WFC was also praised for the strong performance they displayed during the match.
The event concluded with a powerful message of the day: “A woman is of great value.”
